assessment in education conjures up images of testing, its Latin root “assidere” means “to sit beside.” This raises a provocative question: In this era of high-stakes testing that’s used to rank kids and schools, what if we reclaimed the word assessment and put it more authentically in the service of learning?

Specifically, I am thinking about the many ways the iPad has enriched and strengthened our daily assessment practices -- and the value I see in authentic, embedded, process-rich assessment that informs and improves instruction.

To ensure that students learn how to think critically and are assessed in an "authentic" way

Action Step 1: Stop thinking technology first.

Action Step 2: Give students authentic choice in how they will demonstrate their learning.

Action Step 3: Help students seek feedback from other students, other educators, and experts in the field.

Think: more rigorous, more relevant, more fun.
